Cheese Sticks Recipe

Filipinos love spring rolls. Basically, we would want to eat anything that’s wrapped around by spring roll wrappers. There’s the classic Turon, Lumpiang Shanghai, Lumpiang Ubod, Lumpiang Sariwa, Dynamite, Lumpiang Gulay, everything! When you hear the word “Lumpia” on any occasion, you would just automatically know that the food will be extra special.

The name “Lumpia” obviously has Chinese origins behind it. These Chinese Spring Rolls are also popular in other Southeast Asian nations such as Vietnam and Indonesia. Regardless of what country it belongs to, the idea is still the same. It’s a mixture of ground meat and vegetables wrapped in spring roll wrappers, and then famously dipped in a sweet and sour sauce.

In the Philippines, there’s no standard version of Lumpia. You can put anything you want, some use ground pork, ground chicken, or even fish as the meat! There’s also a famous wrapped dessert in the Philippines called Turon which is Saba Banana wrapped in spring roll wrapper and then fried in oil coated with sugar. Sounds tasty, huh? Moreover, there’s another version of Lumpia called the Dynamite. It’s basically a combination of a long green chili and sticks of cheese wrapped in spring roll wrappers. It is then deep-fried until crispy, this way, the combination of the melted cheese and spicy kick of the chili really creates an irresistible taste! The Dynamite is best served with a cheese dipping sauce, yum!

With all these snacks and desserts mentioned, there’s one simple comfort street food in the Philippines that’s really loved by many, it’s the classic Cheese Sticks! These are popular appetizers made with cheese wrapped in spring roll wrappers and then deep-fried. The crispy lumpia wrapper with melted cheese inside really gives us a satisfying snack to look forward to. Usually, you can find cheese sticks on some street vendors selling them together with Kwek-Kwek, Kikiam, Fish Ball, Squid Balls, and many more! The usual sauce for cheese sticks on the streets is a combination of mayonnaise and ketchup, which the kids really love!

If you’re craving some cheese sticks right now, you don’t have to worry! Making them is as easy as 1-2-3. So, are you ready? Tune in because Panlasang Pinoy Recipes will be teaching us how to make Cheese Sticks at home!

Cheese Sticks Recipe

It won’t even take you more than ten (10) minutes to prepare this popular appetizer. Moreover, you can easily buy all of the ingredients at your nearest market, grocery store, and even Sari-Sari Store! So, let’s begin, shall we?

First of all, we will only need a total of four (4) ingredients to make our favorite Cheese Sticks. We’ll need a pack of cheese, lumpia (spring roll) wrapper, oil, and water with flour. The mixture of water with flour will be used for sealing the lumpia wrapper more effectively. Oh, and we will be using Eden Cheese for this recipe! Eden has long been a trusted brand of cheese for every Filipino. It is made only with the best quality of ingredients which brings out the best-tasting cheese loved by everyone!

To begin, simply cut the cheese into bite-sized strips, then set them aside. Next, cut the lumpia wrapper into four (4) equal parts. This is to make sure that the lumpia wrapper is perfectly sufficient for the cheese strips. Now, wrap the cheese strips with the spring roll wrappers and then enclose and seal them properly using the water and flour mixture. Repeat this process until you use up all of the cheese.

Alright, we’ll now start frying! First, preheat the oil in the frying pan. Then, put the wrapped cheese into the frying pan. Be careful because the oil should be very hot during this time. Keep on frying the lumpia until it becomes golden brown. Finally, let the lumpia cool down and drain its excess oil before preparing for its plating. And that’s it! You’ve successfully made your own version of our favorite cheese sticks at home!
