With its irresistible flavor, Lasagna is loved by dinners worldwide. Although this recipe varies per cuisine, a local variation captured the palate of many Filipinos. The Greenwich-Style Lasagna Supreme is a recipe from a well-known pizza and pasta restaurant in the Philippines, known for its mouthwatering flavor and presentation. Aside from being affordable, the dish obtained a loyal fanbase for its creamy and cheesy goodness. But before you try this recipe hack, let’s talk about where Lasagna originated.

Lasagna or Lasagne originated in Ancient Greece, derived from the word “laganon” – the first form of pasta. Laganon refers to flat sheets of pasta dough that are cut into strips. However, it looks different from the Lasagna dish we all know today. While Laganon contains layers of pasta and sauce, it doesn’t have traditional Italian ingredients. Meanwhile, Ancient Rome had the same dish as Lasagan called “lasanum,” which means pot or container in Latin. The Italians used the word lasanum to refer to the dish served in a pot.

But to be precise, Lasagna originated in Naples, Italy, during the Middle Ages. The modern-day dish was first referred to in a 14th-century English cookbook, featuring a recipe with layers of pasta without any tomato. Around the 1880s, another recipe was discovered in an Italian cookbook featuring a lasagne with tomato sauce. Over time, the dish developed and adopted the same name. It was traditionally called “Lasagna di Carnevale” in Naples, which consists of hard-boiled eggs, fried meatballs, sausage, mozzarella or ricotta, and Neapolitan Ragu.

One of the most popular varieties of this dish is the “Lasagna al Forno,” which originated from Emilia-Romagna in northern Italy. This variation consists of sheets of spinach-made pasta, oregano, onion, wine, bechamel sauce, thick Ragu, and mozzarella or ricotta. Its history would not be complete without the variations from Italian regions since different areas use varying sauces or dough. But in the Philippines, the Greenwich-Style Lasagna Supreme variety is a sure hit for Filipinos, perfect for dinners of all ages.

The key to making this Lasagna recipe taste better depends on the meaty tomato sauce placed in between pasta sheets. Then, it’s topped with a creamy and cheesy sauce that will melt in your mouth. While it’s just a simple dish, you can add enough meat and tomato sauce to make this recipe more flavorful. After cooking, serve and eat Lasagna hot to enjoy the melted, creamy, and gooey cheese. Lasagna is also best paired with garlic bread to make the dish more enjoyable.

The step to make Lasagna is simple. Cook the pasta sheets until al dente and make two pasta sauces. First, create a meaty tomato sauce to fill the in-between of pasta layers. The second sauce is the creamy and cheesy Lasagna topping. Also, you can use other kinds of ground meat, such as pork or chicken, whichever you prefer. Afterward, assemble and bake your Greenwich-Style Lasagna Supreme and serve it at your next gathering!
