This is for all of those who love chicken wings! Panlasang Pinoy Recipes presents to you Sprite chicken wing recipe!

Sometimes, a dish is all about the sauce! What gives it flavor  is that rich, smooth, finger-licking sauce. And this recipe will surely give you that kind of satisfaction! But why use soda? Why should we use Sprite when you already saw videos showing how these sodas can be used to clean dirt away from your toilet, tiles, and sinks? Why? Wouldn’t it dissolve the meat? The answer is no, it won’t. The acid in sodas cannot dissolve meat; it will only tenderize it. That is why sodas are commonly used in marinades; they make the meat soft and full of flavor. They also give a sweet and acidic flavor to the meat. To lock the flavors in the meat, a thickening agent is used with soda. In this recipe, oyster sauce will do the work.

One trivia regarding the acid in sodas called phosphoric acid: it has a pH level of about 2.7 that can be acidic enough to corrode teeth. This pH is within the range as that acid in the stomach that can dissolve meat. How do these acids differ? The one in sodas has no additional enzyme called pepsin as that in stomach acid; this enzyme is the one helping in breaking down of food particles in the stomach. Is this information helpful? We think so.

Sprite is also common in Korean dishes. They use it as a substitute for fruits and alcohols, specifically mirin, which is a Japanese rice wine similar to sake; however, it has lower alcohol content and higher sugar amount. And we know how high in sugar a soda can be. That is why, Sprite is a good cooking choice. Want to prove it by yourself? Try this recipe now!
