A lot of Filipino recipes that are specifically cooked for the afternoon snack or meryenda use a popular banana variant that originated in the Philippines called saba banana which can be eaten raw or cooked. This banana variant is used as a secondary ingredient in many Filipino dishes for its sweet flavor but it’s more popularly used in Filipino dessert dishes like halo-halo.
Again, the saba banana variant is widely used in many Filipino recipes specifically eaten for merienda or afternoon snacks. Some of the most popular ones are turon, banana cue, and maruya.
Saba banana is also going to be an important ingredient in our crunchy banana choco balls. I was thinking of making a twist for our merienda.
We commonly have turon at home which is a classic merienda dish that wraps the saba banana in a turon wrap and fried with caramelized sugar. It’s very filling to the stomach for an afternoon snack and we’ve having turon and maruya since I was young.
Turon, banana cue, and maruya are commonly bought outside from street vendors if you want to have it for merienda but we’ve taken to making homemade ones these past few years. So we have a semi-regular stock of saba banana in our pantry if ever we want something like turon for our afternoon snack.
But I wanted something a little different. Something that also uses saba banana because it has become such a staple merienda ingredient. Plus, we have saba banana in stock so why not use them? I also wanted something sweeter like chocolates.
Something that I also wanted different is the heavy full feeling when eating fried saba banana that’s coated with caramelized sugar, like with eating banana cue. So I wanted this merienda dish to be just bite-sized pieces.
So after some hours of experimenting, lo and behold, I present to you, crunchy banana choco balls! It has the sweet flavor of the saba banana that’s perfectly complimented of the additional sweetness of the chocolate inside. I’ve opted to coat the banana balls in bread crumbs to give it that crunch because I thought it needed some contrasting texture and something to balance off that sweetness.
It’s a sweet and simple recipe to do at home that I’m sure any kid or adult with a sweet tooth would love.
For this recipe, we’ll need 6 pieces of ripe saba bananas. There are plenty in the local market that you can buy. You can choose whatever kind of chocolate you want to use for this recipe. I opted for the regular button chocolates that are used for baking because we had some leftovers at the pantry. We also need 1 cup of breadcrumbs and 1 cup of water.
Other ingredients we need for this recipe are ½ cup of flour, ¼ cup of cornstarch, 2 tablespoons of water, and cooking oil for frying.

How to Make Crunchy Banana Choco Balls (Trending Now!!!)
- 6 pcs. Saba Banana Ripe peeled and boiled
- 1/2 cup Flour
- ¼ cup Cornstarch
- 1/ cup of of Water
- 1 cup of Breadcrumbs
- Cooking Oil for frying
- Chocolate for filling
- 2 tbsp. Water
- Boil the banana until soft and mashed using a fork while it is still hot.
- In a bowl combine mashed banana, all purpose flour,cornstarch and 2 tbsp. water. Mix
- well. Set aside.
- Take a scoop of banana mixture and fill it with chocolate, shape into a ball and dip and
- roll in breadcrumbs. Repeat to all the banana mixture. Set aside
- Heat the oil and fry the breaded banana balls until golden brown. Drain the oil with tissue
- Let it cool and serve with your family. Enjoy
