How to Make Ham and Cheese Bread Toast

Have you ever saw advertisements of food channels or restaurants on the TV and they show a delicious looking piece of sandwich? I’ve been seeing plenty of that sort of advertisements lately and it never fails to entice me into wanting a piece of what they’re eating. I always noticed that its always an elaborate recipe for a sandwich with ingredients that stacks it up until the sandwich is short to half a foot tall.

Well, I’m sure that would make for a full meal and it certainly looks delicious but I always thought the average Filipino wouldn’t bother fixing up those such an elaborate recipe all for a sandwich. Here in the Philippines, the sandwiches are mostly eaten for snacks to satisfy that little hunger you’re filling when lunch or dinner is still hours away.

There’s not a lot of sandwich Filipino recipes that I know. Filipino households for the most part simply grab pandesal and dip it in their cup of coffee. Some will also slice it open and fill it with some peanut butter if they want something extra.

Mayonnaise is also quite popular for sandwiches here. Lady’s Choice is a popular brand in the Philippines that is known for its mayonnaise product with different flavors. A simple spread of their mayonnaise between two slices of bread can suffice for a sandwich for the everyday Filipino.

If you want to have more elaborately made sandwiches, the best bet is to go to a restaurant. Many restaurants have some kind of sandwiches on their menu that’s served as a snack. I think the most elaborate sandwich I saw on a menu from a local restaurant was a clubhouse sandwich. But that’s not what we’re making for this recipe.

Yes, because of the sandwich commercials, I’ve been browsing through sandwich recipes online, just looking at their name for a start. I don’t think the Filipinos have a culture of fixing up a sandwich with whatever ingredients are available in the kitchen like in other western countries. As long as there’s slice bread and filling like mayonnaise or peanut butter on the table, they’re good to go. I think most Filipinos would rather make a full meal with the time they would spend fixing up an elaborate sandwich for a quick snack.

And that’s exactly what I did to satiate my craving. Just a simple two slices of bread with some mayonnaise filling. But after the snack, I got to think. Is there something that’s a quickly prepared sandwich that anyone can do without all the need for elaborative preparation?

I took a quick look at my pantry and came up with this ham and cheese bread toast recipe. This type of sandwich is definitely not new but I think the use of everyday ingredients that’s already in the kitchen can make a lot of Filipinos easily follow this recipe. We’re also going to toast the bread after dipping it in a beaten egg. This technique is something that will alleviate this sandwich in terms of flavor and texture.

Fun fact: the oldest evidence of the ham and cheese sandwich’s existence goes back to the 18th century where an Irish immigrant in England, Patrick Connolly, is said to sold a bread dish consisting of cured pork meat and Leicester cheese. This type of dish is still known as the Connolly in some parts of the UK.

Anyway, the ingredients for this recipe are listed down below. We also enumerated the step by step cooking instructions. We also made a video that’s quite fun to make for the visual learners. All of the ingredients for this recipe and the step by step guide on how to make this ham and cheese bread toast are discussed in the video.

This can be stored and eaten as a snack when you’re going out or whenever you have visitors for merienda. Enjoy!
