How to Make Homemade Piyaya using kawali

One of the all-time favorites and classic Pinoy comfort foods out there is the
one and only Piaya. This is an unleavened sweet bread that can be served either
as a dessert or a snack. It’s like a flatbread filled with rich, gooey, and the
heavenly filling usually made of muscovado sugar. Piaya originated from the
Negros province, the “Sugar Capital of the Philippines” and it easily became a
hit and spread throughout the country’s provinces.

Growing up, Piaya snacks are usually found outside of schools where you
can also buy other iconic Filipino street foods such as Kwek-Kwek, Kikiam,
Fishball, Siomai, and many more! Over the years, Piaya became more and more
popular among Filipinos that’s why it also came in many different flavors like
chocolate, ube, and even coffee. Well, no matter how you like it, having a brown
bag full of Piaya can absolutely make your day 100x better!

So don’t worry! Today, Panlasang Pinoy Recipes have got our sweet
cravings covered because we’ll be learning how to cook our own Homemade
Piaya Recipe by only using a cooking pan. That’s right! So get yourself ready
because we are in to add another blockbuster Filipino snack to our menu.

No need to worry! This Homemade Piaya Recipe is very beginner-friendly
and I’m sure that you’ll be able to follow all the steps and procedures without
even breaking a sweat. Moreover, all the ingredients we need for this recipe can
easily be found at your nearest grocery outlets and local markets. So, are you
ready? Let’s begin!
To start, the ingredients we’ll need for our recipe today are flour,
powdered milk, salt, oil, water, crushed Grahams, sugar, and of course,

cocoa powder for the chocolate filling! Yup, today we’re going to make
Chocolate-flavored Piayas. I’m sure the kids will absolutely love their newfound
comfort snacks once you’re done with this recipe!
Alright, now that we’ve already gathered all the ingredients we need, it’s
time to make Piayas! First, we’ll be making the base dough for our Piaya. To do
that, simply combine the flour, powdered milk, and salt in a mixing bowl. Then,
gradually pour some oil and water as you mix the ingredients well and become a
dough. And that’s it! You already made a nice base dough for our Piaya.
Now, we’ll be making another set for our chocolate filling. In another
mixing bowl, just combine the cocoa powder, sugar, flour, and crushed Grahams.
Oh, and add just a touch of salt to balance all the rich flavors. Then, simply pour
some oil and water while gradually mixing all of the ingredients well. Keep on
doing this until the mixture reaches a dough-like consistency. And just like that,
we already have our rich and flavorful chocolate filling!
Now that we already have our base dough and chocolate filling for our
Piayas, it’s finally time to combine them and create wonderful snacks. Sprinkle a
dash of flour into your mixing bowl then start mixing the base dough again with
your hands until it reaches a smooth and fine consistency. Once you’ve achieved
that, slice the dough into small portions and make it flat using a rolling pin then
set them aside for a while. Simply repeat this process on the chocolate filling
dough. Finally, put the chocolate filling at the center of the flattened base dough,
roll them into balls, then simply flatten them again using a rolling pin until they
finally look like Piayas. And there you have it! As simple as that, you already
made your own Piayas at home!

All that’s left to do is to cook the Piaya by only using a cooking pan. Before
cooking, simply use a fork and gently poke some holes into the Piaya to make
sure that it will be well-cooked. Now, just heat the pan and cook the Piaya until
its golden brown and crispy!

How about that? It’s very simple and easy to follow, right? Just serve these
Piaya along with bottles of ice-cold soft drinks and your merienda will absolutely
be a hit. You can also serve them using the kawali or cooking pan for a better
presentation!
