The dish is the pork variant of the Sweet and Sour Tilapia recipe, another Filipino favorite. But before we discuss how to make this recipe, let’s talk about the origin of this mouthwatering dish. Originating from China, the traces of Sweet and Sour Meatballs can be found worldwide, including in Thai, Cantonese, Chinese, Korean, Italian, and Filipino cuisines. Sweet and Sour sauces and dishes have existed in China since 708, served in Shaowei banquet festivals during the Tang Dynasty. According to some authors, the authentic Sweet and Sour sauce originates from the Chinese province of Henan.

However, the sauce in Henan is a bit lighter, contrary to what most people consider Sweet and Sour. Chinese people traditionally used the sauce as dipping for meat and fish. Unlike Westernized Chinese cuisine, they used the Sweet and Sour sauce for cooking. Aside from that, South Koreans use the Sweet and Sour sauce to make tangsuyuk, a popular Korean Chinese dish. It’s made with pork or beef coated with flour/corn starch and deep-fried in oil. Then, it’s served with a Sweet and Sour sauce with various fruits and vegetables.

In Europe, Sweet and Sour sauce also existed since the Middle Ages back to 1390 English cuisine cookbook. The French also have their Sweet and Sour sauce known as “gastrique” or “Aigre-doux,” made of sugar and vinegar. Meanwhile, Italians have the “agrodolce,” which translates to sour and sweet. The same goes for Filipino cuisine since the Sweet and Sour sauce was brought to the country with the influence of Spaniards. In Filipino cuisine, the Sweet and Sour sauce or “agre dulce” is often served as a dip for appetizers, such as okoy and lumpia.

Later, Filipinos used the sauce to cook fish and pork dishes, giving birth to the Sweet N Sour Pork Meatballs recipe. The sauce is made by boiling water, cornstarch, sugar, salt, and vinegar. You may also opt for other tangy ingredients, like pineapples, tomato, or banana ketchup, whichever you prefer. Afterward, the mixture is boiled and simmered until the sauce becomes thick and sticky. You can even add Labuyo chilis to add some kick to your sauce. Also, don’t forget to add bell pepper, ginger, garlic, onion, and dice pineapple to your sauce.

Once your sauce is ready, proceed to the next step. Prepare your meatballs and fry them. Drain the excess and your meatballs in the Sweet and Sour sauce. You can serve it as a main dish, appetizer, or even at parties. But remember, the key to this recipe lies in the sauce. So, before adding the meatballs, ensure your Sweet and Sour sauce is on point.
