The Common FAQ About Nonstick Pan?

Nonstick pans some of the most popular kitchen tools or cookware in this modern age. Many swear by their nonstick pans as a holy grain in their cooking experience. Nonstick cookware are considered to be one of the easiest kind tools to work with in the kitchen as well as for cleaning as its nonadhesive properties does not allow food particles to stick to its surface. However, recent controversy regarding the nonstick cookware’s coating becoming a health hazard has created debate whether they’re safe or unsafe to use in the kitchen. In this article, we’ll try to answer some common questions about whether or not nonstick cookware are safe to use.

What is a nonstick frying pan?

A nonstick frying pan is similar to ordinary frying pans in that they both are usually flat-bottomed pans that are used to fry, sear, and brown food that can have either shallow or deep sides to contain certain portions of food in. The difference is nonstick frying pans are coated with a chemical substance called polytetrafluoroethylene or PTFE. PTFE provides the nonstick properties to the pan because of PTFE’s nonadhesive structure. This makes cooking in and cleaning nonstick frying pans faster, unlike ordinary pans.

Why does food still stick to my nonstick pans?

There are several reasons that foods are sticking to nonstick pans, one is that the nonstick pan you’re using is of lower quality with an uneven or thin coating of PTFE. Another is that the nonstick pan may have been used for too long as the nonstick coating deteriorates over the years. The loss of nonstick qualities of the pan can also be caused by improper cleaning and improper use such as using high heat to cook food as most nonstick pans are made to cook in low to medium heat.    

Do I need to put oil in a nonstick pan?

You still need to put oil for cooking in a nonstick pan. However, the advantage of using nonstick pans is that you can use less oil or fat to cook your food. A little oil is useful to put on nonstick pans while cooking to prevent damage to the nonstick surface. Better yet, coating nonstick pans with oil and setting to dry before cooking, otherwise known as seasoning or treating, is a great habit to make nonstick pans last longer.

Does olive oil damage nonstick pans?

Theoretically, nonstick pans don’t need oils such as olive oils to cook food. However, to better prevent damage to nonstick pans a little barrier or lubrication between the nonstick surface and food is recommended while cooking, especially for ingredients with a hard or scratchy texture. A possible way that olive oil or oils, in general, could cause damage to nonstick pans if they’re heated excessively which can leave a varnish-like coating to pans.

Does Olive Oil ruin nonstick pans?

In general, oil can’t ruin nonstick pans. However, if heated excessively the oil that can leave a varnish-like coating to pans that can damage the pans which will lessen its nonstick quality. If done often, this could ruin nonstick pans over time. Like most oils, olive oil is safe to cook in nonstick pans. It’s one of the safest oils to use. Vegetable oils, on the other hand (especially soy oil), can be harder to clean off nonstick pans which can potentially ruin its nonstick surface.  

Can you fry in a nonstick pan?

Yes, nonstick pans are great for frying food. Many companies manufactured nonstick pans specifically made for frying food. There are advantages in frying in nonstick pans compared to ordinary pans such as nonstick pans requiring less oil to fry food so there is less nutritional value lost in the food. However, be sure to watch that the heat doesn’t get too high when frying with nonstick pans because it can damage the nonstick coating to which the chemicals used can then leech onto the food you’re frying.

Can you deep fry in a nonstick pan?

Nonstick pans are not recommended to cook with using high heat as this can damage its nonstick surface. Deep frying requires high heat to properly cook food and using nonstick pans for deep frying foods can cause the chemicals in the nonstick coating to seep into the oil and the food. It’s better to use proper deep-frying cookware specifically made to deep fry food. This is much safer for both the nonstick pans and your health.  

How long should nonstick pans last?

  Modern nonstick pans are made tougher and durable compared to earlier versions. But how long nonstick pans last or how long they can retain their nonstick properties depends on how people use them. However, in general, nonstick pans last about five years before they’re needed to be replaced. If the surface of your nonstick pans is peeling off or has scratches, that means that it’s time to replace them as their nonstick qualities are already damaged. 

Is it safe to use scratched nonstick pan?

No, it is not safe to use scratched nonstick pans. This is because the nonstick coating made up of the chemical substance PTFE is more likely to leach into food if the coating is scratched. This increases the rate of release of the toxic compounds that are observed in the food, especially when using high heat. Scratched nonstick pan if still in use can have flakes of its nonstick surface come off and consume with the cooked food. Researchers said that these flakes of the nonstick coating can go through and out of our system without causing any adverse effects. But to be on the safe side, it’s better to just throw away and replace your scratched nonstick pans.

Is Teflon cancerous?

Despite many online information warning people about the dangers of Teflon, Teflon in itself doesn’t cause cancer. However, when nonstick pans are overheated, the Teflon coating releases into the air as the chemical substance called polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and within PTFE can be found the chemical that is used to create Teflon named perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). PFOA is the carcinogenic substance that is found to increase the risk of developing tumors in lab animals, however, there is still inconclusive data that has failed to show if PFOA does truly cause cancer in lab animals and little research is done to prove that it poses the same risks to humans.

With that said, it is still advised not to overheat Teflon cookware as the fumes emitted can cause flu-like symptoms to humans.

Is Teflon banned?

In the Philippines, there are no industry regulations or regulations being developed anytime soon that compels companies to ban Teflon. Similar to the west, Teflon isn’t banned from the market. However, manufacturer companies and chemical industry leaders are in the process of phasing out the chemical known as perfluorooctanoic acid or PFOA in the making of their Teflon products because of its potentially harmful effects and are instead developing tougher and safer methods to create Teflon for nonstick products. This is in agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that calls for the Teflon chemical ban. 

Is ceramic nonstick cookware safe?

Ceramic nonstick cookware is one of the most popular alternative options. They are indeed safe to use for cooking, especially those advertised as being PFOA safe. However, the same precautions of using nonstick pans apply to ceramic nonstick cookware, as with any cookware that with a coating. It’s not advised to use high heat on nonstick ceramic cookware because fumes from nonstick ceramic cookware can contain harmful compounds. It was also found that some porcelain glazes on some ceramic cookware have small amounts of lead. So it’s important to choose the safest ceramic nonstick cookware to use. 

What are the safest nonstick pans?

The safest nonstick pans are probably the ones that don’t contain any perfluorooctanoic acid or PFOA in their nonstick coating. With the gradual phasing out of PFOA by nonstick cookware manufacturers and chemical industry leaders per their agreement with the EPA (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency), more nonstick cookware not containing PFOA are becoming more and more common.  

The newest versions of nonstick pans are most definitely the healthiest as awareness of the potential harms from fumes containing PFOA are at an all-time high. This compels companies to find safer alternative methods in creating their nonstick coatings to their cookware.

What is the healthiest nonstick pan?

Similar to the statements above, the healthiest nonstick pans are the newer models that are available in the market for purchase because of upgraded technological methods used to create nonstick coatings for cookware. Additionally, it’s a healthier choice to purchase thicker nonstick pans instead of thinner or lightweight ones because thicker pans can sustain higher heats, are more durable, and have thicker coatings that are less susceptible to damage.

Is Pampered Chef nonstick cookware safe?

Papered Chef advertises their nonstick cookware to be free of toxic chemicals like PFOA and reinforced with titanium. Pampered Chef’s nonstick cookware being PFOA-free makes does make it safe for cooking and the cookware being reinforced with titanium makes it more durable and more resistant to damage. However, general precautions for cookware with any kind of coating still applies. As long as Pampered Chef’s nonstick cookware is not heated too high, it’s completely safe to use. 

Are nonstick waffle makers Safe?

Nonstick waffle makers are as safe as any other nonstick cookware in the market. As long as it’s not set to high heat or left heating without any batter then it’s safe to use. The danger with nonstick cookware is if have any PFOA chemical substance and only if it’s heated to extreme temperatures that it can cause any potential damage to our health.

Is ceramic cookware better than nonstick?

It all comes down to personal preference. Both types of cookware have nonstick properties that make less need for oil and butter in cooking ingredients, both are durable, and both are relatively easy to clean if the right materials are used. Nonstick cookware is considered easier to clean and more durable compared to ceramic cookware because using abrasive materials to clean ceramic cookware can easily damage its nonstick coating and leaving leftover oil or butter can entirely ruin the ceramic cookware. However, ceramic cookware is more preferable because it doesn’t use any harmful chemicals for its nonstick coating, is safer to cook with for those who have pets–especially birds, and can be made with different styles and colors that add a more personal touch to the kitchen.

Is stainless steel safe to use for cooking?

Depending on the quality of the stainless steel, cookware made of stainless steel is safe to cook with. Stainless steel is made with several different metals, mainly of iron and chromium with differing percentages of nickel, copper, molybdenum, titanium, and vanadium. The disadvantage of using stainless steel cookware is that these metals can possibly leach into our foods, with the most dangerous metal that can affect our health being nickel. So it’s advised to choose stainless steel cookware will low to none nickel content. However, the chances of the metals in stainless steel cookware leaching into our food are quite slim. 

Which is better stainless steel or nonstick pans?

There are pros and cons to consider between choosing stainless steel cookware of nonstick cookware. Stainless steel is more durable with a far longer lifespan than nonstick cookware, can be used for different styles of cooking, set to high heat with little to none health risks, and doesn’t use have a chemical coating on its surface which makes it healthier to use. However, this also means that solid ingredients can easily stick to stainless steel cookware and will require more effort to get it cleaned. 

Nonstick cookware, on the other hand, we already discussed its health risks above, but it’s perfectly safe to cook with using low two medium heat, great with cooking solid ingredients without the food particles sticking to the cookware, and are easier to clean. In general, for safer, versatile, and more durable cookware, choose to invest in quality stainless steel. However, it’s still quite handy to have a few nonstick cookware in your arsenal to cook more solid foods without it sticking to the pan like eggs and pancakes.

What is the safest cookware for your health?

If your safety and health is your number one priority when it comes to choosing cookware, it’s best to avoid these kinds of cookware altogether: nonstick, copper and aluminum as these three kinds of cookware have links to health risks in one form or another. Glass cookware is the safest option in the market, however they can be very fragile and isn’t the best at conducting heat evenly. It’s best to use it as food containers. The safest and healthiest kinds of cookware that are also great to cook with are ceramic, enamel-coated cast iron, stainless steel, and cast iron. All these types of cookware are nonreactive to food, non-toxic, very durable, can conduct heat evenly, and are durable with long lifespans.

Choosing which kind of cookware among the list all boils down to personal preference as each has its pros and cons. Some things that they all have in common that is considered a disadvantage, however, is that they can be easily ruined if not handled or cleaned properly so it’s best to research proper handling of these kinds of cookware before investing in one for your kitchen.
