Are Tupperware products BPA free?

Tupperware has been a signature brand for storage containers especially for leftover food. However, an issue regarding their use of BPA surfaced that caused people to doubt their products. But first, what is BPA? According to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, BPA, or Bisphenol A, is a chemical produced in large quantities. BPA is used to produce polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. BPA has been used since 1960s to make plastic products like food containers because of its sturdy quality.

With several researches about the adverse effects of BPA, people began to question Tupperware’s credibility as they are aware that Tupperware use polycarbonate plastic. 

Tupperware has exerted effort in satisfying their customers. They are aware of opinions from their customers regarding their use of BPA. They found new materials with improved quality to replace polycarbonate in their products. Tupperware released an official statement in their website that their products are BPA-free since 2010 to adhere food safety standards. Accordingly, children’s products are BPA-free since then.

Does Tupperware replace BPA products?

Tupperware claims that they have been using other materials for their products that are approved by regulators to be BPA free. As of Spring 2010, all new Tupperware products are BPA free due to consumer demand. But how about the old products? Most of the old Tupperware products are already phased out. Thus, the new products are made with new materials. However, products that are made prior to 2010 is still suspected to have BPA.

Is Tupperware plastic good for the health?

There are recent studies regarding the use of BPA in Tupperware products and how it affects the health of the consumer. The study focused on how BPA the development of the nervous system of newborn babies. The results of the study showed that there are sensitive effects caused by BPA that are often overlooked. BPA mostly affects the female offspring as it causes adisruption in the endocrine. Moreover, BPA is also linked to obesity, breast cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and reproductive disorders, and more.

According to some studies, plastics like BPA leaches chemicals into our food and drinks which can have adverse effects in our health. This is one of the reasons why experts suggest to use glass containers instead. Other alternatives are using containers made with stainless steel. However, if you still want to choose plastic containers, choose safer plastic containers and avoid storing acidic or greasy food. Furthermore, throw out plastic containers that are scratched and worn since worn containers have a higher leaching risk. Experts also recommend to avoid putting plastic containers in the microwave and dishwasher for safety.

Most Tupperware products contain high-density polyethylene (HDPE), or plastic #2, polypropylene (PP), or plastic #5 and low-density polyethylene (LDPE), or plastic #7 that are the safest plastics that can be used to store food repeatedly.

Is Tupperware eco-friendly?

Tupperware products can be recycled. A recycling code can be found at the bottom of the Tupperware product. Tupperware used to use virgin plastics that can be harmful in both the human health and the environment. Nonetheless, Tupperware plastics are now recycleable and be used to make new products. Recycled plastics aids in controlling environmental pollution. Moreover, Tupperware observes a green, eco-friendly packaging. In Australia, their product packaging (soft plastics only)  can be deposited in local REDCycle bin to be recycled.

To sum it all up, Tupperware helps Mother Earth their products are intended for longer use compared to other plastic containers and other storage items that are not intended for repeated use such as Styrofoam containers PET bottle, and plastic bags and bottles. 

Does Tupperware have a lifetime warranty?

Tupperware assures their consumers that their products have lifetime guarantee that it can withstand the test of time under normal domestic use. As stated in their website, Tupperware products provide a Lifetime Guarantee so the consumers can buy with confidence. However, keep in mind that there are incidents that are not covered by the Tupperware Lifetime Guarantee. Products that become defective because of the consumer’s fault, such as getting in contact with heat and it melted or it breaks because it got knocked over, are not replaceable under the Lifetime Guarantee.

Moreover, keep in mind that there are instances when some parts or products are no longer available in the company. Instead, the company will replace the parts or product with similar functions and of similar value to the parts or product that is subject to replacement. There are some products that are not covered by Lifetime Guarantee such as TupperChef Stainless Steel Cookware, multi-purpose shears, and can openers.

Moreover, items that comes with bags or pouches are not included in the warranty. Other conditions that are not included in the lifetime warranty are cosmetics under BeautiControl, Hanokke tableware items (10-year warranty), and more. Keep in mind that the replacement will be delivered a month or more if they are not available. 

You can also submit the defective product to a dealer. Choose a reliable dealer that delivers quick service.

How do I claim my Tupperware warranty?

If you purchased a defective Tupperware product, bring your Tupperware products to any authorized Business Center for warranty replacements. The company determines whether the defect is a manufacturing defect. Moreover, as stated in their website, “the replacement warranty does not cover bags and pouches and non-Tupperware plastic products which shall be governed by their specific warranties”.

Before bringing the product to any authorized Tupperware brand’s Branch or business center, make sure to wash and clean it with soap and water. The warranty is non-transferable, which means the original purchaser is solely allowed to benefit the product warranty. Furthermore, the customer must submit all parts and components of the product. Products that are marked with the Q symbol in brochures are free of manufacturing defects; thus, they are not covered by the warranty.

The manufacturing defects that are valid for replacement are: rust mark on new knives and peeler blades, and other stainless parts, melamine products (blurring of decals, sharp edges, embedded dirt/black spots, uneven glaze), and bag stitching quality and zipper functioning issues.

Don’t forget to bring the product warranty insert of the product upon submission of the product for replacement within 30 days of purchase for a free replacement.

Should you throw away old Tupperware?

Tupperware products are durable and can last a lifetime. Don’t be surprised to see loads ofTupperware products in your grandmother’s home that has been with them since they were still in grade school. However, if your Tupperware products already have scratches or worn, it is time to toss them away especially if your purchased the product prior March 2010 since it is most likely to contain BPA which can be harmful for your health. Scratches can manifest bacteria and allow chemicals to each into your food. Also, if your container looks cloudy instead of clear, toss it away.

How do you deodorize Tupperware?

Aside from washing it immediately after use, there’s another trick you can apply to deodorize your Tupperware containers. One hack is to store them with a pinch of salt to get rid of funky smell. After washing the container with dish soap and water, fill the container with vinegar and let it sit for three minutes. Then rinse with soap water again. Another trick is to store them with newspaper overnight.

How do you clean greasy Tupperware?

Nothing is more frustrating than washing a greasy Tupperware. The trick is to soak the Tupperware for several minutes in a lukewarm water then wash with dish soap and rinse with cool water. For easier dishwashing, make a baking soda paste with water and let it sit on the container for tenty to thirty minute to remove oil resdiues. To remove stains, you can soak the container with a mixture of water and bleach. Or soak it with 1 tablespoon of vinegar in a cup of water.

Is vintage Tupperware dishwasher safe?

Most Tupperware products manufactured after 1979 is dishwasher safe except for some items like ice cream scoop, TupperChef knives, Shape-O, and more. For vintage Tupperware products, you have to handwash them.
